Are there varying degrees of whiteness? Are there varying degrees of blackness? How much white do you have to have in order for you to be near-white?

Near-white. So, technically how far from that is black?

A Mulatto Woman with her White Daughter Visited by Negro Women in their House in Martinique by Le Masurier
I remember trying to find images of mulatto, biracial and multiracial people years ago on the internet and this one always seemed to come up first (once I got through all the ridiculous porn and sexually charged imagery.)
As I search for more, it seems this one has gone down a few notches; which I guess is a good thing if I can assume the reason being that there are more images of mulatto, biracial and multiracial individuals on the internet. Or, maybe people are just tired of looking at this one. Either way, it's still a relevant image worthy of discussion.
I find it interesting that the mulatto woman, and her daughter, are depicted as being important in the Martinique society...they have nice clothing, a slave-boy servant, a gentleman-servant (or perhaps he was a suitor?), plenty to eat and drink and last but certainly not least, they have their own house to which two black women are visiting them. Did the woman have all this before she became pregnant or only after and the white father is taking care of his new family? Was the father the woman's husband? There are so many questions to be answered. As the saying goes, I wish I could have been a fly on the wall.

Juliette Aristides - Mulatto
I found this image on the internet a few years ago and liked it so much that I did something very bad. I downloaded it and had it printed. It now hangs in my guest bedroom in a simple 8x10 frame that doesn't do it justice at all. I know, I should be ashamed of myself. I owe Juliette Aristides some money. But I honestly enjoy looking at it every time I walk in and see it. It's so real and so raw; and there's no shame in her nakedness even if it is only from the shoulders on up. I just hope that one day I can save up enough money to afford the real version - if I can even find it. I can't seem to find it anywhere on her website or in general internet searches. So, if you know where it is, please tell me! I'd love to go see it in person.
